Intern at Hellabeem

At Hellabeem, we offer 8 challenging internship opportunities each year for students of Psychomotor Therapy (PMT) and movement therapists. These internships last 3 to 4 months, depending on the season, and provide you with the chance to develop your skills in a unique and intensive environment. Be sure to read the experiences of our previous interns below.

What does the internship involve?

Psychomotor Therapy is a treatment method that focuses on improving mental and social health through movement and body awareness. At Hellabeem, we work with young people who benefit greatly from this specific form of therapy. As an intern, you will use movement, body language, and physical interaction to address behavioral and emotional challenges.

Why Hellabeem?

Hellabeem places great importance on the psychomotor development of young people. We believe that training psychomotor skills not only contributes to their physical and mental well-being but also positively influences their language development, social skills, and cognitive functions such as mathematics and abstract reasoning. You can be a part of this transformation.

What can you expect?

During your internship, you will have the opportunity to actively participate daily in the treatment of our youth. Since each young person receives intensive psychomotor and physiotherapy, we offer a learning environment where you can gain hands-on experience and rapidly develop your skills independently. And all of this takes place in beautiful Sri Lanka.

If you are passionate about Psychomotor Therapy and would like to contribute to the development of young people in a professional and stimulating environment, we warmly invite you to intern at Hellabeem. Contact Helène Heijen for more information.

What interns say about Hellabeem

What an amazing time I had at Hellabeem! I had the opportunity to intern here for 4 months as part of my Psychomotor Therapy and Movement Studies program. I found it exciting and a bit daunting to start, with all the differences, but I wouldn’t have missed this experience for the world. Hellabeem was a fantastic learning environment for me, where I could experiment and learn so much. Thanks to this internship abroad, I take home a backpack full of life experiences and memories. Memories of a wonderful Hellabeem family, all the staff and boys, and everything we experienced together. I hope many students after me will take on this amazing adventure. Jan and Helène, thank you so much for the wonderful time here at Hellabeem in Sri Lanka!

What a beautiful time I had here at Hellabeem! I loved working with the boys, seeing their determination and motivation to learn. It’s incredible to witness how much they can achieve in just four months. Take the boy who started in a wheelchair and now walks with two crutches – sometimes even just one! The Hellabeem family is truly like a family; you feel at home and safe. The boys treat each other like brothers and help one another whenever needed. It was an incredibly educational period in which I grew as a psychomotor therapist. Thank you to everyone at Hellabeem for everything!

From February to June, I spent five fantastic months in Sri Lanka. For four of those months, I had the pleasure of interning at Hellabeem as part of my Psychomotor Therapy and Movement Studies program. Together with Laurette Buitenhuis, I provided sports and therapy for the boys at Hellabeem. We worked closely with Sameera, the assistant physiotherapist. The collaboration and therapy sessions went very well and were incredibly enjoyable! I loved interacting with everyone at Hellabeem and felt completely at home. I gained immense respect for Jan and Helène for starting this project and saw firsthand how much the boys benefit from it. Hellabeem is like a big family, and I’m grateful to have been part of it. It’s an experience I will never forget.

For my Psychomotor Therapy studies, I went to Sri Lanka for four months. I had the privilege of being part of this project and working with these incredible young men. Together with Elian, my fellow intern, we aimed to contribute to the boys’ physical and mental development. We worked closely with Sameera, the physiotherapist, combining our efforts with his to achieve great progress with many of the boys. As a student, but also as a person, I learned so much here. The boys at Hellabeem taught me to appreciate the small things in life and to be content with who you are. What is taken for granted by many is not always the case here. From the very first moment, I felt at home at Hellabeem and am incredibly grateful for this wonderful period. I have many beautiful and warm memories that I will never forget. Jan and Helène do incredible work here for these boys, and I hope they can continue for many more years. Thanks to them, these amazing young men at Hellabeem have a brighter future!
