This is what we do

At Hellabeem, we believe in the power of determination and perseverance to overcome barriers and build an independent life. Our center in Sri Lanka provides physically disabled and underprivileged young people with the opportunity to discover and develop their potential, regardless of their background or faith.

During their stay on our campus, the youths work intensively on their physical, educational, and psychosocial growth. Through a holistic approach that focuses on education, rehabilitation, and psychosocial support, we provide them with the tools to build a dignified and independent life.

Education

At Hellabeem, education is at the heart of the youths’ lives. We offer both basic and vocational education, carefully tailored to the age and level of each individual. Many of our young people have had little or no access to formal education in the past. Therefore, we focus on catching up, teaching them foundational skills and preparing them for an independent future.

Our education program covers a wide range of subjects, including electronics, computer science, and graphic design. The youth also learn practical skills such as repairing computer hardware and mobile phones. For disabled children in the community, especially girls, we offer additional training such as basic computer skills and sewing courses. We also provide training in vegetable gardening and fish farming. Hellabeem aims not only to impart theoretical knowledge but also to prepare the youth practically for life after Hellabeem. We do this by offering subjects that enable them to start their own business or secure employment.

Additionally, the integration of education with psychosocial support plays a crucial role in our program. We believe that education is not only about transferring knowledge but also about building self-confidence and developing social skills essential for a successful and independent life.

Rehabilitation and Sports

Rehabilitation is an essential part of the guidance provided at Hellabeem. Our comprehensive rehabilitation program focuses on improving the physical abilities of the youth through physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, psychomotor therapy, massage, and yoga.

For some young people, surgeries are necessary to enhance their mobility; Hellabeem supports them through this process and provides aids such as wheelchairs, prosthetics, and walking frames. Sports are an integral part of the rehabilitation process. Through sports, the youths not only improve their physical abilities but also develop teamwork and a sense of connection with others. Sports offer a welcome diversion and relaxation in their daily routines. Regular participation in sports activities helps the youths train their bodies and increase their stamina, which positively impacts their overall well-being and recovery process.

Children from the local community are also involved in Hellabeem’s rehabilitation program. They are given the opportunity to participate in our therapy sessions and sports activities, contributing to their physical development and integration into the community.

Psychosocial Support

At Hellabeem, care goes beyond physical rehabilitation. We place great emphasis on the psychosocial development of our youth. We provide a safe and supportive environment where they can work on building self-confidence, self-esteem, and social skills. This is achieved through a wide range of activities, including drama, music, drawing, and subjects such as agricultural techniques and handicrafts.

The goal of this psychosocial support is to help the youth strengthen their sense of self-worth and equip them with the tools to function independently in society. Through creative subjects and practical workshops, they not only develop their talents but also learn to better cope with life’s challenges. These skills are essential for their personal growth and ability to integrate successfully into society later.

Hellabeem also recognizes the importance of families and the broader community. We offer short stays and training sessions for girls and women, giving them the chance to develop and acquire new skills. This not only fosters the self-reliance of the youth but also contributes to the empowerment of the entire community.
